Dr. Dusenbery began his training in the art of Karate shortly after entering the University of New Hampshire graduate school in September, 1972 where he met his Karate teacher Peter M. Rose. He studied under Master Rose - then a second degree Black Belt and assisted him with managing the Rose School of Karate. Dr. Dusenbery tested for Shodan-ho after only nine months of study-a feat that has not been repeated to this day. He earned his certified first degree Black Belt in the Minimum time allowed of three years. Dr. Dusenbery was the assistant instructor under Master Rose until his departure for Colorado in 1978, after receiving his Doctor of Philosophy degree in theoretical physics.

While teaching under Master Rose, Dr. Dusenbery trained hundreds of enthusiastic students. His experience in teaching young, old, men, women, and children has enabled him to reach and help many different people. Tiger Arts Grandmaster Dusenbery has given numerous demonstrations for schools, scout groups, and rape prevention teams, along with having taught special self-defense courses for women. In 1975, he was appointed secretary to the New Hampshire State Black Belt Federation.

In 1979, Grand Master Brock of the National Karate Association (NKA) appointed Dr. Dusenbery as the Western Regional Director for the NKA and in 1983 he was promoted to the NKA Board of Directors as its Executive Vice-President. He was responsible for developing the Association database and publishing the NKA Newsletter.

In 1993, Grand Master Peter M. Rose appointed Dr. Dusenbery to the Board of Directors of C&S. He is also on the Board of Directors for DART, Inc. – a nonprofit conflict management organization. Besides teaching Karate, Dr. Dusenbery is a space scientist, a writer, a lecturer, and the Executive Director of the Space Science Institute, a nonprofit institute dedicated to space research and science education. Dr. Dusenbery currently holds a certified eight degree black belt in the C&S Self-Defense Association.
 

Sensei Thompson
Sensei Thompson is a 5th degree black belt who began his martial arts study in 1980 under Grandmaster Dusenbery in Boulder Colorado. His travels have exposed him to over 15 different styles across several continents and over a dozen different states in the United States.

Thompson’s studies have included several years of Tai Chi, Shoto-kan, Tai Kwon Do and Judo. He has been a guest instructor for numerous clubs and has demonstrated significant organizational leadership in both Tiger Arts and the C&S Self Defense Association.

Thompson’s military service includes assignments with United Nations forces in Asia, the 1st Ranger Battalion in Savannah GA, Rapid Deployment Forces and Military intelligence. Prior to leaving the military, Thompson had achieved the rank of Captain and was decorated with a bronze star for his actions under hostile fire.

He is currently the Chief Operating Officer (COO) for ThinkVillage, an organization that advances new innovations into the marketplace.

S
ensei Cohen is a black belt who began studying Shudokan in Omaha during the 1990’s. He has studied under Grandmaster Dusenbery and Master Thompson since 1996. He also serves on the Board of Directors of DART, Inc., a nonprofit organization that teaches violence prevention. In addition to teaching karate, he completed DART’s lead instructor course and teaches practical safety awareness and self-defense courses.

Currently a lawyer in private practice, Mr. Cohen is an expert in martial arts and the law and in the law of self-defense. He is the author of Negligent Operation of Boxing Gym, Martial Arts School, or Similar Establishment, which appeared in the prestigious American Jurisprudence Proof of Facts series. He also wrote The Ultimate Self-Defense Primer and Legal Self Defense For School Owners, both of which were published in Inside Kung-Fu. He is also an expert on workplace violence and authored Elements of an Effective Workplace Violence Program, which was published in The Colorado Lawyer in 2004.  In 2010 the Colorado Bar Association asked him to update the Workplace Violence chapter of The Colorado Practitioner's Guide to Employment Law.

Mr. Cohen served as an Air Force Judge Advocate and was the ABA’s Outstanding Young Military Service Lawyer of the Year in 1986. He served as a Special Asst. U.S. Attorney for Nebraska, as municipal judge for the City of Boulder, and as a member of the Executive Board of the Colorado Municipal League. He is currently a member of the Board of Editors of The Colorado Lawyer.

Flatirons Karate Club is a Martials Arts school and a nonprofit corporation that provides practical self-defense training to students from Boulder, Nederland, Ward, Rollinsville, Black Hawk, Central City, Jamestown, Gold Hill, Gilpin County and Pinecliffe.
